yesterday finding that all of naima's pants were fitting like capris, i opened the next box of nevaeh's hand-me-downs. size 24mos & 2T (meaning they are sized for 2 year olds). unlike the previous batch of clothes that i had foggy memories of nevaeh wearing for 2 days when she was 6 months old, these clothes were familiar; these were clothes i know, tied so closely to the images i have of her as a baby. and as if they didn't look enough alike. naima is officially nevaeh's curly haired, pasty white clone.
last week naima decided she was going to walk everywhere. she really only started walking a few steps at a time a couple of weeks ago. and though she can be cripplingly shy, she is- like her sister- a born performer. i think it has something to do with being adored...anything that will make people ooooh and aaaaah and awwwww. her big party trick now is walking. she will walk laps around the room and then stop to look back with her arms thrust out beside her to say "da daaaaa", which is of course her version of "ta da".
although it seems naima is growing up and away before our eyes, we are really feeling it with nevaeh. she's become this little girl all of a sudden. dressing herself, feeding herself, playing by herself...all these things she did before but now she requires little to no assistance from us. even her bathroom trips are solo now. and just when we all are expecting to breath a sigh of relief and murmur "ahhhh it's been a long 4.5 years", we are finding ourselves a little bit lonely. i'm not speaking in the third person by the way, more i'm speaking on behalf of all of her caregivers. my parents and mike's mom have all noticed it too. she needs us less and less, and with freedom we get distance. i suppose it's a natural process, and good god she's not quite 5, but it's a taste of what to come.
